On Saturday, a winter wind storm blew here so fiercely, that it ripped one of our farm’s greenhouses... the galvanised metal pole one -right off its moorings and flung it rolling across the field towards the houses. It caught a foot on a pile of lumber and disintegrated into a pile of twisted poles and flapping plastic.
The other greenhouse was more firmly attached, but still the gale wrenched the rebar poles out of shape while it was lifting and banging it onto the ground repeatedly. Intrepid farmers ran out to successfully secure the edges so the wind couldn’t keep wrecking it. Oh, but it’s a heart break to see farmers working so hard in the ‘one step back ‘ of the ‘two steps forward’!Then on our internal mail came this from the surviving greenhouse’s owner ...
Thank you, from the bottom of my heart, everyone. I don’t know what I would have done with out you all, last night. When I first got out there, and saw the side of my greenhouse almost completely caved in, I felt pretty alone and distraught. My partner was at work and sister was in Abbotsford. So I just got to it and started trying to prop up the side of my greenhouse that was caving in, when all of a sudden I see this massive structure go rolling past. "What is....? Oh My Gosh! Please don’t hit my greenhouse, hmm should I run? Where to? Please don’t hit my greenhouse.... CRASH! I am so sorry Osprey Organic Farm farmers for your loss. I’m sure we can work something out. And homeowners must have been terrified watching that mass of plastic and metal coming straight for them. (You looked a terrible shade of white when I saw you lol).
And then this almost immediately from one of our residents here...
Let us know when the new greenhouse work party is. I get that building your greenhouse (the first time) is farm work, but recovering from an act of God seems like an opportunity to work together to get people back on their feet.!
